Do you need an excuse for a road trip? With regular sailings from the Steam Packet Company, it couldn’t be easier to load up the car and go on an adventure to the ‘Adjacent Isle’. We love our little rock, but sometimes you need to escape before you’re overcome by cabin fever.
Gef has rounded up five fun-filled weekend breaks for you and your bestie that are only a short drive away from Heysham sea terminal.
When your best mate is…your dog
Man’s best friend. You won’t ever find a more loyal companion than your doggo. Treat your furry friend to a weekend that’s ALL about him with a visit to the Lakes. Just an hour’s drive from Heysham, the Lake District is practically on our doorstep and have a whole host of activities for you and your doggo to enjoy (and for your human mates too).
Most of the accommodation, restaurants and pubs are dog-friendly so you can take your little mate on a never-ending adventure where he can meet plenty of other doggos for muchos tail wagging and bum-sniffing. Take your pick from these dog friendly cottages and be sure to check out Grizedale Forest for the ultimate ‘walkies’.
When your best mate is…your dad
When was the last time you had a lads trip with your dad? Treat your Papa Bear to a celebration of comics, illustration, animation and more at the UK’s largest comic art festival. Taking place every September in Leeds, Thought Bubble attracts thousands from around the world. There’s special guests, exhibitions and pop-up workshops, plus you are in a great city for food and nightlife. We recommend Estabulo Rodizio Bar & Grill where you can enjoy large skewers of prime cuts of meats cooked on open flames and brought right to your table-side.
Whilst researching this one we realised that most of the gals in the office would be all over the comic art festival. So don’t let the ‘Dad’ in the title put you off!
It takes approximately 1 hour 45 to arrive in Leeds from Heysham. There’s a Premier Inn just outside of the city centre with plenty of free parking.
When your best mate is…your mum
A girls’ first ever best friend is her ma. What would we do without the woman that brought us into the world? Treat her to a weekend of shopping, cocktails and catch ups to show her how much you appreciate her.
Manchester has no shortage of shopping centres as well as high street destinations to shop to your heart’s content. The Trafford Centre is just over an hour away from Heysham so decide which of you is designated driver, stick on some tunes and get ready for a good girly weekend.
Staying outside of the city centre gives better choice for parking – the Travelodge Manchester Upper Brook Street has cheap rooms with free parking so you can save your pennies for cocktails at the Alchemist.
When your best mate in…your Nan
If there’s anyone who will appreciate a cream cake and a good cuppa, it’s your Nan. You’d be spoilt for choice if you take her on a trip to Chester. Choose from a luxury high tea at the Grosvenor Hotel, a touch of Wonderland at Mad Hatters, or a traditional treat served in the monks’ dining hall at the Cathedral.
Chester is known for its extensive Roman walls, Tudor-style shopping district and a Roman amphitheatre, with ongoing excavations. The drive takes about 1 hour 40 from Heysham. The Mill Hotel is our top pick to stay – free parking, spa facilities and breakfast included in the room price. What’s not to love?
When your best mate is your…actual best mate
If you are looking for a fun-filled, action-packed trip away, then Blackpool really does have it all. The UK’s favourite beach resort features a theme park, aquarium, a waterpark, wax figure celebrity look-a-likes, street markets plus the greatest free lightshow – the Blackpool Illuminations.
The year-round programme of events and fantastic shows is under an hour’s drive from Heysham, practically a crime not to go if you ask us! Stay at Seagull Hotel for cheap rooms, free parking and a central location.
If you haven’t taken a road trip with your bestie, it’s definitely one to tick off the bucket list. Where would you like to take your bff?
